ISIS media release video claiming to show Iran military parade attackers

"We've been very clear that they shouldn't take us on like that".

Asked whether Iran's threat gave him any concern, Mattis told reporters at the Pentagon: "No, it does not".

"Definitely, we will harshly punish the operatives" behind the terror attack, he added.

While not much is known about the group, ASMLA, one of the main separatist Arab groups in Khuzestan, spokesperson Yaghub Hur Totsari said the Ahvaz National Resistance group is actually "an umbrella organisation of all armed movements" operating in Khuzestan for the cause of Arab independence from Iran.

There was no immediate response from the Saudi or Israeli governments.

Amid wails and vows of revenge, thousands of Iranians on Monday attended a mass funeral service for victims of a weekend attack targeting a military parade that killed at least 25 people.

"Iran's answer (to this attack) is forthcoming within the framework of law and our national interests", said Mr Rouhani, adding that the U.S. would regret its "aggressiveness".

"As you can see now, all of the people, whether they're Lor, Arab, Shushtari or Dezfuli, are all here today and all say death to the terrorists", he told AFP.

Guards Brigadier General Hossein Salami, in a speech broadcast on state TV, said: "You have seen our revenge before".

"You are responsible for these actions; you will face the repercussions", Salami said of the U.S., Israel and Saudi Arabia, Iran's semi-official Fars news agency reported.

Iranian Intelligence Minister Mahmoud Alavi announced on Monday that the most of those persons behind the Saturday terrorist attack in Ahvaz have been arrested.

With a military parade in Khuzestan's city of Ahvaz on Saturday, Iran marked the start of the 1980s Iran-Iraq war that began after Baghdad attempted to annex the province, seeing as it was rich in oil and home to a significant Arab population.

As he spoke the crowd chanted, "Death to America" and "Death to Israel".

Iranian news agency Irna reported on Saturday that Denmark, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom has been accused of providing shelter to opposition groups in the Asian country, according to Reuters. The attacks in Ahvaz sent women and children fleeing alongside the soldiers once marching in the parade.

The Islamic State in Iraq and Syria's Amaq agency posted a video of three men in a vehicle who it said were on their way to carry out the attack.

In an August 2017 article, Bolton proposed one of the ways the USA could pressure Iran would be through supporting ethnic minorities like Kurds, Balochis and the Arabs of Khuzestan - the wider province Ahvaz is capital of. The separatists, however, previously only conducted pipeline bombings at night or hit-and-run attacks.

The Ahvaziya is an Iranian ethnic Arab separatist organisation and considered a terror organisation by the Iranian government.

The secretary of Iran's National Security Council said Tehran needed to talk to its neighbours to avoid tensions. The UAE did not immediately acknowledge the summons. He stressed the United States had no advance knowledge that such an attack was possible.

Iran's Foreign Ministry earlier summoned the UAE charge d'affaires over comments made about the bloody fusillade at the military parade, state-run PressTV said. The claim further raises tensions in the Mideast as Tehran's nuclear deal with world powers is in jeopardy after President Donald Trump withdrew the USA from the accord.

How has Iran threatened to respond?

Haley released the statement as Iranian President Hassan Rouhani was in NY for the 73rd annual session of the United Nations General Assembly.
