However, it did try to sate some of its fans' enthusiasm by unveiling the handsets' cheaper sibling, the Mate 20 Lite, at IFA 2018. It's the world's first commercial 7nm SoC and that's a big deal if you care about speed and battery life.
The Mate 20 Lite will be powered by Huawei's midrange Kirin 710 chip, as opposed to the supremely powerful Kirin 980 - the first of its kind for a 7nm chip - shown off by the company earlier today. The Porsche Design Mate RS is the first Huawei smartphone to offer in-display fps. The chip will be 20% faster and 40% more efficient than 10nm chips. The Kirin 980 SoC has an interesting octa-core design, featuring two high-performance Cortex-A76 cores clocked at up to 2.76GHz, two mid-performance Cortex-A76 cores at up to 1.92GHz and four low-power Cortex-A55 CPU cores at up to 1.8GHz.
Huawei on Friday officially announced the Kirin 980, what's claimed to be the world's most powerful system-on-chip for smartphones and tablets.
"The Kirin 980 is the ultimate engine to power the next-generation productivity and entertainment applications", Yu added, as reported by IANS. The launch event will take place in London this time. In addition to being the first 7nm SoC, Huawei said it ticks a couple of other boxes, including the first to use Cortex-A76 cores, the first with Mali G76 GPU, the first with dual NPUs, the first with Cat.21 LTE modem, the first supporting LPDDR4X-2133, the first with up to 1.7Mbps WiFi, and the first with dual ISP. That's a 46 percent improvement in graphics processing power and a 178 percent jump in power efficiency over last year's Kirin.
Furthermore, the Kirin 980 supports common AI frameworks such as Caffee, Tensorflow and Tensorflow Lite, and provides a suite of tools that simplify the difficulty of engineering on-device AI, allowing developers to easily tap into the leading processing power of the dual NPU.
Huawei also launched at IFA 2018 AI Cube, its home speaker with 4G router and built-in Alexa that can perform several tasks such turning on the TV or playing music. The company's sub-brand, Honor, announced the Magic 2 smartphone with Oppo Find X-like sliding camera module.
While the P20 Pro is impressive, Huawei still hasn't released a phone with the specs or price point to really challenge the likes of Samsung and Apple in the premium mobile space.
