'Extremely dangerous' Florence strengthening on approach to USA coast

"Florence is expected to slow down considerably by late Thursday into Friday", NHC officials said."On the forecast track, the center of Florence will move over the southwestern Atlantic Ocean between Bermuda and the Bahamas through Wednesday, and approach the coast of North Carolina or SC in the hurricane warning area on Thursday and Friday".

Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center have said Florence is expected to be an extremely unsafe storm by the time it nears the coast of SC or North Carolina on Thursday.

The Miami-based center said that it was still too early to predict the hurricane's exact path but that a huge coastal area from SC to the mid-Atlantic region should prepare for a major strike late in the week.

Hurricane Florence is now a Category 3 storm, and is expected to continue to intensify as it approaches the coast.

On its current track, the storm could make landfall around the Carolinas on Thursday or Friday.

The National Hurricane Center said despite Florence eventual path, large swells will begin to affect the U.S. East Coast this weekend, resulting in life-threatening surfs and rip currents. The storm is expected to strengthen into a major hurricane as it slowly moves toward the U.S.by late next week.

The other storms — Tropical Storm Isaac and Tropical Storm Helene — are both expected to become hurricanes Sunday or Monday.

"Somebody is going to suffer devastating damage if this storms continues as it is now forecast", Dan Miller, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Columbia, told The State newspaper.

Hurricane Isaac, meanwhile, was expected to lose strength as it reaches the Caribbean, and Helene, much farther out to sea, may veer northward into the open Atlantic as the 2018 hurricane season reaches its peak.

Gov. Ralph Northam declared a state of emergency Saturday as communities up and down the East Coast monitor Tropical Storm Florence.

A third storm, Tropical Depression Nine, is moving west-northwest at 5 miles per hour in the eastern Atlantic.

Although it is quite a distance away, swells generated by Florence will begin to affect Bermuda Saturday, and Florida along with most of the East Coast of the US will see increasing waves and rip currents this weekend.

In Jacksonville, North Carolina, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) inland, some residents picked up hurricane supplies during their normal weekend shopping, The Daily News reported.

Walsh says we could see adjustments to the models throughout the next few days that may bring severe weather to SC including "tremendous amounts of rainfall" starting Friday along the coast.

Hurricane Florence is likely to approach Category 5 status, the most powerful grade of hurricane, the National Hurricane Center said Tuesday.

Virginia and North Carolina and SC already are on alert.

Residents in North Carolina and other East Coast states should pay attention to the storm and begin to think about hurricane plans.

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper said his state was "in the bullseye" of the storm and urged people to "get ready now".

Category 4 storms, with winds of at least 130 miles per hour, can cause "catastrophic" damage, the hurricane center said, snapping trees, and toppling power polls.
