Djokovic wins US Open for 14th major, tying 'idol' Sampras

With the US Open 2018 title in his bag, Novak Djokovic equals Pete Sampras' 14 grand slam titles in men's singles.

Novak Djokovic defeated Juan Martin Del Potro 6-3 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 to win his third US Open title in NY.

Djokovic's rise from No. 6 thanks to claiming his 14th Grand Slam title continues his own steady progress in recent months. Roger Federer of Switzerland has 20 Grand Slam titles and Spain's Rafael Nadal has 17 singles' Grand Slam trophies to his name.

The 31-year-old Serb won 6-3 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 to earn his third triumph in NY and equal American great Pete Sampras' haul of major trophies.

Djokovic had lost five previous finals at Flushing Meadows, but he was determined to make amends for his lack of trophies in NY as his defensive ability combined with his ruthless prowess saw him break in the fourth game, although Del Potro was not in the mood to give up so easily as he hit straight back.

Djokovic seemed on his way to a smooth victory with a 3-1 lead in the third set, but Del Potro wasn't quite ready to surrender.

He had three more chances in the eighth, all saved by Djokovic in a marathon 20-minute game which left Hollywood superstar Meryl Streep clasping her head in astonishment.

Defeat for Argentina's Del Potro ended his chances of claiming a second US Open crown following his victory in 2009 but still capped a remarkable run after he almost quit the sport in 2015 because of ongoing injury problems.

Del Potro insisted he is happy to be playing in the era of Djokovic, Federer and Nadal. The runner-up, Serena Williams, is back in the top 20 at No. 16, after being No. 26 before the U.S. Open - and outside the top 400 as recently as May, following the former No. 1's time away because she had a baby.

In New York, while some of his fiercest rivals fell by the wayside over a bruis- ing fortnight, Djokovic did not let the intense heat or any of his opponents push him off his path to a third title at Flushing Meadows.

Del Potro was looking at having to become the first man since Pancho Gonzales in 1949 to win the United States title from two sets down. "But I was playing nearly at the limit all the time, looking for winners with my forehands, backhands, and I couldn't make it because Novak was there every time". Three times, Djokovic steeled himself.

Federer and Nadal have made me the player I am today. He first won the Wimbledon to announce his return back to top form and has now won the US Open 2018 title comprehensively.

It was a brief request, though, unlike her many other pleas for quiet, mainly as fans were shouting and chanting and clapping in support of del Potro.

It also marked the Serbian's second straight major success, while he holds a 26-2 win-loss record since his quarter-final defeat at the French Open.
