Carolina Panthers sign safety Eric Reid

Eric Reid, who has been out of the NFL since filing a grievance against the league in May, alleging that teams were colluding to deny him a job, has been signed by the Carolina Panthers. Reid was one of the leading players who took a knee during the national anthem. He has played at a very high level. In the case of the Carolina Panthers, they hit both on the money with today's signing of former 49ers safety Eric Reid. The 6-foot-1, 215-pound Reid played the first five seasons of his National Football League career with the 49ers after they selected him in the first round of the 2013 National Football League draft.

Panthers general manager Marty Hurney told The Associated Press it was a "football decision" that was approved by new owner David Tepper.

The 2-1 Panthers were in need of help in the defensive backfield after starting safety Da'Norris Searcy suffered his second concussion in five weeks and was placed on injured reserve. "He's a hell of a safety, a really good player". They played with a three-safety rotation on Sunday against Cincinnati, starting Mike Adams at strong safety and Colin Jones at free, with rookie Rashaan Gaulden giving relief.

Kaepernick added that Reid is an "all pro safety who should have been signed the 1st day of free agency".

Reid is now involved in a lawsuit against the NFL.

"I hope so", he said. "People who know me, know my character". "He's a good player". So to say that [they aren't patriotic] makes me so aggravated and angry.

Reid backed Kaepernick while the quarterback made a decision to kneel during the national anthem starting in 2016. "I don't see what a team hasn't signed him or won't sign him".

Justin Reid said he planned to call his brother to congratulate him after practice Thursday on signing a one-year deal with Carolina. Reid could also quickly swoop in as a key part of their secondary while stabilizing that unit of the defense moving forward this season.

The Panthers have a bye this week and next play at home on October 7 against the New York Giants. "I don't think Reid signing a contract would wipe away" the grievances, Lenz said.
