Canada not making concessions needed for Nafta deal, US says

U.S. President Donald Trump says he rejected Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's request for a one-on-one meeting to discuss NAFTA. The White House wants this trade deal to replace NAFTA, though it's unclear if it is legally possible to replace a three-country pact with a two-country arrangement.

Trump went on to say that the USA will be taxing cars coming in from Canada because the United States is "very unhappy" with the current NAFTA negotiations.

Canada was left out when the United States and Mexico reached an agreement last month to revamp the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta).

Both the US and Mexico have said they will press ahead with the bilateral accord they reached last month, with or without Canada.

Trump cast serious doubts on those talks, saying he was very unhappy with "the negotiations and negotiating style of Canada".

He was asked if he had denied Trudeau a request for face time while the two leaders were at the UN.

Then trump told reporters that he had rejected a request by Trudeau about the meeting "because his rates are too high, and he seems unwilling to change its position".

Trump has used national security as justification for the tariffs, under Sec.

There is "still a far amount of distance between us", said US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer on Tuesday about ongoing talks with Canadian negotiators.

"I'm not going to use the name 'NAFTA, '" he said. "We're going to tax the cars that come in", he said.

Kenneth Smith Ramos said there had been "progress" on some key issues between the United States and Canada and that "we're simply hopeful that whatever gaps can be resolved in the next days, if not weeks".

The US and Canada are basically out of time to iron out their differences in a trade agreement before the Sept 30 deadline to have a completed full text.

President Trump said the U.S.is not getting along with the Canadian negotiators "at all".

The deal, if enacted, would not be almost as disruptive as what Trump has long threatened, to get rid of NAFTA, which he claimed had cost thousands of auto industry jobs.

He also mentioned another tough issue, American demands for greater access to Canada's supply-managed dairy market.

The Trump administration has said the text of an agreement is needed by Sunday to allow the current Mexican government to sign it before it leaves office at the end of November.

Trump vowed Tuesday, during his address to the UN General Assembly, that his administration would systematically renegotiate "broken and bad trade deals". If Canada comes along now, that would be best.

"It's really a question of whether or not the United States wants to have a deal". "I think there's a possibility there to build on what they agreed".
