Bears acquire, extend Khalil Mack in blockbuster trade with Raiders

Yes, the Bears indeed acquired former Defensive Player of the Year and two-time All-Pro pass rusher Khalil Mack from the Oakland Raiders.

First reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Bears shipped out two first rounders to Oakland for the 27-year-old, per NFL Network's Ian Rapaport. Mack, who is entering the final year of his current contract, has sat out all preseason looking for a new contract and appears to have gotten one with the Bears.

One big name to watch is Dante Fowler of the Jaguars, since the team didn't exercise the fifth-year option on his contract and it's unclear whether Jacksonville can afford to sign him to a long-term deal.

Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald, the 2017 Defensive Player of the Year, signed a six-year, $135 million deal Friday, with $87 million guaranteed, that made him the highest-paid defensive player in league history. Oakland also included its second-round selection in 2020 and a conditional fifth-rounder that year. So long as the locker room gets over this initial shock (more on that in a moment). Mack has 40.5 sacks in four seasons, with 10.5 a year ago and a career-best 15 in 2015. Mack will be playing for the Chicago Bears. Not under an economic system in which a team can unilaterally extend a prized rookie's contract to five years and then utilize the franchise tag for a few seasons after that.

Mack made National Football League history in 2015 by becoming the first player to be named first-team All-Pro at two positions (defensive end and outside linebacker).

The Bears were well-positioned to land Mack due to their salary cap situation surrounding Trubisky's rookie contract and flexibility elsewhere on the roster.

Acquiring Mack, a true pass rusher will give defensive coordinator Vic Fangio something to smile about.

If that nightmare makes your last meal threaten to make a return visit like mine just did, you'll be glad to know it's the Oakland Raiders that are experiencing this horrific sensation here in the real world. Mack has accumulated double-digit sack numbers in the last three seasons with the Raiders.

This is one hell of a bold move.

Other teams made enticing offers of multiple picks, but the Bears were willing to offer the most.
