Samsung posted its slowest quarterly profit growth in more than a year on Tuesday as the sluggish global smartphone market weighed on earnings, although the chip business continued to perform well. While the company doesn't reveal the actual price of the smartphone, a recent report claimed that the 128GB storage variant of the Note 9 model will come with a price tag of IDR 13,500,000 (approx Rs 64,400).

Samsung Electronics Inc. didn't mince words in its latest earnings call, admitting that smartphone and display sales were declining, and that its memory business was picking up the slack. However, the company reckons demand for its flexible OLED technology will improve in the second half of this year.

Adding to its troubles, its vice-chairman Lee Jae-yong, scion of Samsung's founding family, was jailed past year for his part in the sprawling corruption scandal that brought down former president Park Geun-hye.

Like other big electronics firms, Samsung faces challenges from the US-China trade war, falling prices of some memory chips and the rise of cheap Chinese-made handsets.

Analysts have also pointed out that the Galaxy S9, the company's flagship smartphone for the year could be its worst selling Galaxy-S smartphone since the Galaxy S3. The Galaxy On8 takes on the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro, Honor 9N and Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 smartphones in India.

"With new flagship smartphone model launches, every content will increase in midrange models because smartphone makers support high-specification mobile games on device AI and dual camera as differentiation point [s]", Chun said.

Samsung has been developing several phones for its consumers and it seems it has spread itself too thin doing so.

Speaking in today's report Samsung said: "Looking to the future, the Company will continue to reinforce product competitiveness based on hardware leadership, by adopting cutting-edge technology and new form factors and gaining leadership in 5G".

According to industry watchers, Samsung might be able to outpace Apple for the entire 2018 fiscal year.

"The company will respond through the early introduction of the Galaxy Note and competitive mid- and low-end models with new features", it added. The Samsung rival already uses the OLED panels in the iPhone X and two new phones are expected from Tim Cook's team later in the year.

The company spent 8 trillion won (7.2 billion US dollars) in capital expenditure in the second quarter, including 6.1 trillion won (5.5 billion USA dollars) for the chip business and 1.1 trillion won (984 million USA dollars) for the display panel division.

Samsung shares slid 0.3 percent by 0620 GMT, compared with the flat broader market .KS11 .
