Rockstar releases breathtaking first Red Dead Redemption 2 gameplay

Rockstar today showed off a first look at the western Red Dead Redemption II, which comes out October 26 for PS4 and Xbox One, and it looks like a fascinating evolution of the first one. Rockstar is really looking to encourage exploration with Red Dead Redemption 2, and the game was created to get around anywhere on horseback or on foot. Red Dead Redemption 2 gives you control of Arthur Morgan, an outlaw with the Van der Linde gang, as he fights for his survival. So far, we've only got three trailers (watch them here, here, and here) each of which has been under two minutes long and consisted mostly of cinematics. As a member of the Van der Linde gang, Morgan will have to provide for the gang as well as receiving missions from them. You will be able to make friends and enemies with the various characters you come across, which is entirely up to you.

Before you click on the video below remind yourself that everything you'll see is actual gameplay footage.

Set in America in the year 1899, Red Dead Redemption 2 takes place at the end of the wild west era has begun as lawmen hunt down the last remaining outlaw gangs. Based on this trailer, however, Red Dead Redemption 2 is the first game to venture beyond the borders of Uncanny Valley. That's changed, with the first gameplay trailer out...well, out right now. It's pretty clear in telling us that actions have consequences throughout the game, which is precisely what we'd expect from an open world title like this. Interestingly, the "Honor" system from Red Dead Redemption returns. Each weapon has unique characteristics and realistic reloading and recoil. You can avoid having a rebellious horse by treating it well throughout your playthrough. After releasing three cinematic trailers for Red Dead Redemption 2 over the past several months, Rockstar has dropped the official gameplay trailer.
