Major changes are coming to the Oscars next year.

Oscar viewership is often tied to the box-office muscle of the big nominees. It's not clear when the new award category will be rolled out. They're scooching up the broadcast a couple weeks earlier in February - but not until the 2020 telecast. - We're planning a more globally accessible, three-hour telecast.

Bailey is the first cinematographer to hold the position of Academy President.

Last night, the Board of Governors met to elect new board officers, and discuss and approve significant changes to the Oscars telecast.

The board of governors announced the changes in a letter to academy members after the board's Tuesday meeting. Winners in less prominent categories will likely receive their awards during commercial breaks, with highlights from those presentations edited and aired later in the broadcast, according to the report. Starting with this Oscars season, the award show will be adding a popular film category.

The airdate has been bumped up just for the 2020 telecast ― from February 23 to February 9 for 2020. Bailey and Hudson said eligibility requirements will be determined at a later date. Don't miss the 91st Oscars on ABC on Sunday, February 24, 2019.

The changes are among the most drastic made to the program in recent years. The Board of Governors took this charge seriously. The following year, the Artistic category was dropped and the Outstanding Picture victor, "Wings", was retroactively considered to be the night's biggest victor.
