Manchester United finally set to land a centre-back

Chris Smalling intends to be part of Manchester United's future despite seeing the club heavily linked with the likes of Toby Alderweireld, Harry Maguire and Yerry Mina.

Alderweireld has always been manager Jose Mourinho's top target to strengthen the centre of defence, but Daniel Levy's reputation as a tough negotiator, especially with United, has once again proven to be the case. Both of those links strangely came about after the pair had enjoyed strong performances at the World Cup.

If United seriously want to challenge for honours this season, defence is an area they simply must address - and agreeing a deal for Mina would go a long way towards accomplishing those goals.

"I hope to see him here but I don't know really", Digne told the Liverpool Echo.

It seems there will be a new centre-back joining Manchester United in the next 48 hours.

Manchester United are thought to be interested in a swoop to sign the Belgium global in the current transfer window to bolster their defence.

He has won eight major honours during his time with the Red Devils, including two Premier League titles, and is about to get back on the trophy trail as Jose Mourinho's side prepare to open their 2018-19 campaign at home to Leicester on Friday.

"Paul Pogba is obviously a great player, but we respect those who are at other clubs", Valverde said.

United have been looking for a top centre half for most of the summer - with the Belgian always seeming like their top target - and have finally now managed to bring Spurs down from their initial £75m valuation of the player.

Now, according to Spanish newspaper SPORT, Everton have acted quickly and look poised to sign the 23-year-old Colombian defender.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is aware that Alderweireld is prepared to run down his contract and leave for "a cut-price fee" next year so he's now accepted that it would make more sense to allow the 29-year-old to leave this week in exchange for a hefty transfer fee.
