Israeli Jets Pound Gaza Strip as Rockets Fired Into Southern Israel

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) claimed that mounting violence began on Wednesday after militants shot at an IDF vehicle in Gaza.

Rocket warning sirens sounded nearly non-stop in the southernIsraeli town of Sderot and other border communities from sunset on Wednesday.

The majority of some 70 rockets hit open areas while 11 were intercepted, Israel's military said.

Israel's rescue service Magen David Adom said seven Israelis, including two men ages 34 and 20, were taken to a hospital for treatment.

A top Hamas official said the group waited for the delegation to leave Gaza before responding with rocket fire late on Wednesday.

Israeli media said the European Union had prepared a plan for transport in the occupied West Bank which included "the establishment of an airport, a port and a railway to link the Gaza Strip with the West Bank". "We are closing in on operation in Gaza", the IDF official said, warning that the army possessed "more capabilities in our arsenal" and was "ready to continue, attacking, attacking and attacking".

According to the Health Ministry in the Hamas-controlled enclave, Kammash and her daughter were killed in an airstrike in Jafarawi in central Gaza, the ministry said, while her husband was injured.

Jamie McGoldrick, the United Nations' humanitarian coordinator for the Palestinian territories, in a news release called Israel's restriction of fuel imports "a risky practice, with grave consequences on the rights of people in Gaza".

Both sides have said they are working toward a cease-fire agreement, though continued rocket fire may dampen efforts.

A statement by Hamas' military force said it was responsible for the rockets.

"Hamas hit the "enemy" with a large number of rockets", it said.

In retaliation, Israeli jet fighters attacked more than 140 strategic targets in the Gaza strip where the Palestinian authorities reported that three people were killed.

The last four months have seen an upsurge in violence along the Gaza-Israel border.

On Thursday, hours before the Palestinian official announced that the violence had ended, a senior Israeli military official said that the army was "nearing war with Gaza" and would evacuate Israelis living in communities adjacent to the border if necessary. The border had been closed in response to damage caused by incendiary balloons launched into Israeli territory. According to reports, it would be the relative of a senior Hamas commander.

It was not clear if the escalation would derail Egyptian-brokered indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas to reach a long-term ceasefire.

United Nations envoy Nickolay Mladenov called on both Israel and Hamas to "step back from the brink" and contain the current escalation before it deteriorates with "devastating consequences for all people".

It stated that the two fighters were part of a military training in "Asqalan" center, one of its training locations in northern Gaza, and that many Palestinians, including political leaders of Hamas, were in attendance.
