Germany warns US Iran sanctions could cause Middle East 'chaos'

Iran dismissed a last-minute offer from the Trump administration for talks, saying it could not negotiate while Washington had reneged on a 2015 deal to lift sanctions in return for curbs on Iran's nuclear program.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif told reporters that the global reaction to Trump's move showed that the U.S. was diplomatically isolated. "But now, all the countries in the world are supporting Iran".

"Isolating Iran could boost radical and fundamentalist forces", he said, adding that "chaos in Iran, as we have experienced in Iraq or Libya, would further destabilize an already troubled region".

Hard-liners plan to question Rouhani in the coming weeks about the government's response to the recent crisis, which has seen the rial plummet to a record low against the dollar and sent unemployment to 12.5 percent following President Donald Trump's pullout from the nuclear deal in May.

"China has consistently opposed unilateral sanctions and long-armed jurisdiction", the Chinese foreign ministry said in a faxed statement to Reuters, responding to questions on the new U.S. sanctions and Trump's threats on firms doing business with Iran.

Trump tweeted on Tuesday that the new sanctions, which were lifted under a 2015 global nuclear deal, were the most biting sanctions ever imposed. "I am asking for WORLD PEACE, nothing less!" tweeted the President.

Following Trump's announced United States departure from the deal in May, the White House has, through 17 rounds, sanctioned 38 Iran-related targets. "Our crews that are on board our ships are well rehearsed, well prepared by the U.S. Navy when they come into our area", Votel said.

He doubled down on that sentiment Wednesday saying that before USA sanctions "nobody supported Iran".

There have been rumours that Trump and Rouhani could meet in NY in September on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly - though Rouhani reportedly rejected United States overtures for a meeting at last year's event.

Noting Iran's geographic proximity to Europe, Maas warned that 'anyone who's hoping for regime change must not forget that whatever follows could bring us much bigger problems'. Unlike many other news organizations, we have not put up a paywall.

Trump also claimed that the sanctions were meant to protect world peace.

Washington's unilateral anti-Iran campaign has nothing to do with worldwide law and fair trade, and thus the threat of potential sanctions won't affect Beijing's sovereign right to freely choose its business partners.

Iran's currency has lost around half its value since Trump announced the U.S. would withdraw from the nuclear pact, but has surged since Sunday, following the arrest of the central bank's currency chief and new plans being announced.
