Firefighters in California gain ground on deadly Carr Fire

Officials are lifting more evacuations across Shasta County as firefighters gain containment on a wildfire burning in the region. Almost 10 days after it started near Highway 299 west of Redding, the fire is only 35 percent contained.

Meanwhile, firefighters were engaged in a pitched battle to contain at least 19 major wildfires that have claimed at least six lives and charred hundreds of square miles in recent weeks. Get the full story in the video above.

Crews helping fight the Carr Fire in Northern California's Shasta County came upon an unlikely pair of survivors in one neighborhood - a cat and a chicken. "For instance, previous year we had the floods so we brought lots of resources from the outside", San Jose Fire Captain Mitch Matlow said.

"What we're seeing in California right now is more destructive, larger fires burning at rates that we have historically never seen", he said.

Despite the outlook, strong gusts along the upper ridge lines were a concern on the fire's rugged western flanks, a few miles from the town of Lewiston, which remained evacuated.

Any family and friends who would like to report a missing person can call the Carr Fire Missing Persons Hotline: 530-225-4277.

Grass Valley Fire Department said in a news release the cat and chicken were suffering from multiple burns, FOX40 reported. There are 23 firefighters with five engine companies and seven apparatus helping Cal Fire at the Mendocino Complex and the Carr fires.

However, the reduced wind speed aided in curtailing the blazes which helped the firefighters to extend the buffer lines.

"We're in for a really rough ride", Brown said at the news conference. The Ferguson Fire, which has burned 63,798 acres, is 39 percent contained. Evacuations were underway for an unspecified number of residents, and more information was expected later Wednesday morning.
