USA service member killed, two wounded in Afghanistan insider attack

Maciel was killed and two other American service members were wounded in what USA military officials called an "apprarent insider attack" while they were advising local forces at an Afghan military facility in the town of Tarin Kowt in Uruzgan Province.

A service member has died in southern Afghanistan in what appears to be a green-on-blue attack, military officials announced Saturday. Additional information was not immediately available and the incident was under investigation. The death is the third American military fatality in Afghanistan this year.

The ambush occurred in southern Afghanistan, U.S. military officials said in a statement without being more specific.

The two wounded service members are in a "stable" condition, North Atlantic Treaty Organisation said, adding it would not be releasing any further details until next-of-kin had been informed. They did not indicate a specific location where the attack occurred.

The Taliban released a statement praising an Afghan soldier for carrying out the attack, without taking credit for it themselves.

O'Donnell told RFE/RL in an e-mail that the soldier killed in the July 7 incident was the third USA service member to have died in Afghanistan this year.

In the April 30 incident, Army Spec. Gabriel Conde, 22, was shot by enemy fighters in a firefight in Kapisa province while providing security for U.S. Special Operations troops.
