Uruguay vs. Portugal - Football Match Report

"I think we played a good game and maybe we deserved more, but in football the ones that score the most goals win and they scored two, so congratulations".

Edinson Cavani scored twice as Uruguay shattered Cristiano Ronaldo's World Cup dream with a 2-1 victory over Portugal on Saturday (Jun 30).

While Messi cut a forlorn figure during Argentina's 4-3 loss to France, Ronaldo tried to inspire.

Edinson Cavani's double sent Uruguay into the last eight of the Fifa World Cup in Russian Federation.

A short corner was worked to Guerreiro and Uruguay did not respond to the threat, the left-back delivering a superb cross that defender Pepe finished brilliantly with a downward header.

Without their star man, Portugal won their first major honour by defeating France in Paris, but as impressive as that success was, the French also played a big part in their own downfall.

In the U.S., Uruguay vs. Portugal aired live on Fox and was live-streamed, along with the rest of the World Cup, on fuboTV (sign up for a free seven-day trial).

Cavani had been instrumental in his side's performance to that point, having opened the scoring in the seventh minute after making an excellently timed run to get on the end of a cross into the area by fellow forward Luis Suarez.

"Now is not the time to talk about the future, either of the coach or the players", the Portugal skipper said after the game. Goalie Fernando Muslera loses the ball and leaves the net but Portugal's shot misses high.

Uruguay's previous five goals at Russian Federation 2018 all came from set-pieces but they opened the scoring in the seventh minute with a goal of the highest quality.

Pepe's goal was the first time the South Americans' defence had been breached in this tournament, but they stood firm after that and are beginning to look like genuine contenders moving into the latter stages in Russian Federation.

Ronaldo barely had a sniff of a chance in front of goal and admitted after the game Uruguay were deserved winners. While the Real Madrid galactico disappointed, it was Edinson Cavani, ably supported by Luis Suarez, who lit up Fisht Stadium with two pieces of exemplary finishing.

Portugal's flank players created some set-piece sutuations but they couldn't yield the desired equaliser as Uruguay saw off the last anxious moments by doing putting in a heavy defending shift.
