Tropical Depression, Hurricane Both Spinning Out in the Atlantic

Tropical Depression, Hurricane Both Spinning Out in the Atlantic

A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Barbados, St. Lucia, Martinique, Guadeloupe, St. Martin, St. Barthelemy, Saba and St. Eustatius. The U.S. National Hurricane Center says, however that a tropical storm watch remains in effect for Dominica. It was centered 865 miles (1392 kilometers) east-southeast of the Lesser Antilles and was moving west at 14 mph (22 kph).

The Category 1 storm is expected to dissipate before reaching the eastern Caribbean but still forecast to dump heavy rain across islands including Dominica and Puerto Rico starting this weekend.

Chris isn't the only storm in the Atlantic.

As you can see in the photo above, Beryl is not expected to affect the state of Florida.

As with any tropical system, we will continue to monitor the National Hurricane Center's forecast as it develops and bring you the latest on our various media platforms when available.

Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 65 miles per hour (100 km/h) with higher gusts.

New tropical storm Tropical Storm Chris, which officially became a named storm at 5 a.m. Sunday, will linger off the North Carolina coastline, slowly gaining strength over the next two days. It was moving west at 14 miles per hour, with sustained winds of 75 miles per hour.

The National Hurricane Center is giving this system an 80 percent chance for development through the weekend.

The storm is expected to become a tropical storm Saturday, the NHC said Friday night, with a "gradual strengthening expected through Monday".

Hurricane Beryl is expected to produce 2 to 4 inches of rain through Sunday across the southern Leeward Islands and northern Windward Islands.

The hurricane might not weaken substantially until it gets near Hispaniola and the central Caribbean Sea, the hurricane center said in its latest storm advisory.

Some of the islands are still recovering from the devastation wrought by September's back-to-back powerful hurricanes Irma and Maria.

Forecasters expect Chris to remain off the coast of the Carolinas for the next several days before heading toward the northeast on Tuesday.
