Thai cave rescue: Boys in quarantine at hospital unable to see family

The Thai youth soccer team and their coach became trapped in the cave they were exploring on June 23 after heavy rains flooded exits. Nine people remained trapped in the cave, including the team's coach, as of Monday morning.

It appears that the team were going into the cave as part of an initiation ceremony which tasked the boys with reaching the end of the cave and returning having written their names on the far wall. Four came out Monday, and it is possible Tuesday's plan was to bring out four more.

According to the Associated Press, a Thai official revealed that the healthiest boys were taken out of the cave first. Eight people remain trapped in the flooded cave system.

"The water level is low".

He added that the divers were the "same multinational team" that rescued the four boys on Sunday.

Looming rain was one of the main enemies of the operation, threatening to flood the cave complex in mountainous northern Thailand, although a bewildering array of other dangers could also doom the escape plans.

Less than an hour after the helicopter took off, Thai public television aired live video of a medivac helicopter landing close to a hospital in the city of Chiang Rai, around 60 kilometers (37 miles) from the cave. Each of the rescued boys has been guided through the dark winding cave by a pair of divers.

Workers have been working around the clock to pump water out of the cave, and authorities said Monday that heavy downpours overnight did not raise water levels inside.

Rescued schoolboys are moved from a military helicopter to an awaiting ambulance at a military airport in Chiang Rai, Thailand, July 9, 2018.

Meanwhile, Thailand's weather department said there was a 60 percent chance of rain on Monday with thunderstorms forecast throughout the week.

The saga has stirred reaction from across the world of politics, sport and business, with American tech entrepreneur Elon Musk trailing the idea of dragging the kids free in a purpose-built escape pod to his 22.2 million-strong Twitter following. If the tests were successful, the sub was to be placed on a 17-hour flight to Thailand.

First of all, four of the boys were successfully extracted from the cave system. Divers escorted the children, who wore equipment to help them breathe.

Narongsak said the first four rescued boys had not been identified out of respect for the families whose sons were still trapped, adding that the boys were being kept away from their parents due to fear of infection. The four unidentified boys were the second batch to be retrieved in as many days by ace rescue divers from a deep and winding cave in the northernmost reaches of Thailand.

Dozens of divers have arrived at the cave on Sunday morning. They began again at 11 am on Monday after the teams had stopped for the night to rest and to replenish equipment and oxygen supplies. They were quickly transported to a hospital in the town of Chiang Rai, the provincial capital.

The soccer team had been trapped in the underground cave network since June 23, with flash floods causing water levels to rise, making it hard to get out.
