Hamilton hopes upgrades will give Mercedes an edge in title fight

Hamilton dropped from first to fourth - and following a series of furious exchanges with the Mercedes pit wall, he then ran out of power after a loss of fuel pressure with only seven laps to run.

He was then followed up by Raikkonen, who achieved his 96th career podium, and Vettel, the new Drivers' Championship leader by a point after Hamilton's retirement.

'We can't afford to throw away points.

Damage limitation was the name of the game now for Hamilton, especially after Vettel's smart overtake at Turn 3 earlier on, however the Brit's luck was about to join that of his teammate's as he retired on lap 64 of 71 with an engine failure.

A furious Hamilton had already accused Mercedes of costing him victory after they failed to react to a Virtual Safety Car (VSC) period and stop their star driver for a tyre change.

Chief strategist James Vowles, his words relayed to a global audience of millions over the team radio, took full responsibility and said his mistake had thrown away the win.

This was just enough for him to wind up ahead of the championship leading Briton by 0.029 seconds with their team-mates Finns Valtteri Bottas of Mercedes and Kimi Raikkonen taking third and fourth places.

Horner also paid tribute to his team for pulling off a high-pressure double stacked stop during the virtual safety auto period that was called when Valtteri Bottas retired.

"[It is] an unfortunate day". Everyone is going to be feeling the pain.

The German, whose team did not invoke orders for Raikkonen to cede position as might have been expected, clawed back the overall lead by a single point from Mercedes rival Hamilton. We never really found the sweet spot, so [there's] work to do tonight. The auto has been great all weekend and then to have two different faults on both cars is very unusual. We need to find a bulletproof method to move forward. "There is nothing I can do about it", he added.

"Very hard to manage the tyres, lot of blistering, but we manged to hang on", he said.

"We will try and analyse and figure out how we can improve". Fact. This is where we lost the race.

"I saw him in the garage, we had a hug".

"We could all have done a better job this weekend". We were controlling the race, running one and two, and suddenly Valtteri stopped. "It can be very, very cruel and we had all the cruelty go against us today and it just got us brutally". Vettel would recover through a mixture of strong pace, tyre management and strategy, to finish third come the checkered flag.

'We have to come back strong and the hard days are the ones where you learn the most but you have to stay positive'.

"It [the blistering] wasn't predicted coming into the race, but it is hot today and the load in these last two right corners, it is massive the amount of energy these tyres have to take up around there", Horner told Sky Sports F1.
