Britain's Brexit minister steps down in blow to May

Theresa May's Government is in deep crisis after David Davis dramatically resigned as Brexit Secretary on Sunday night. Well done David Davis for having the principal and guts to resign.

Mr Dodds, who was a director of Vote Leave, the official pro-Brexit campaign, said it was now clear that all of the United Kingdom would leave the United Kingdom together, adding: "Republicans may be disappointed as they tried their best to seize this as an opportunity to weaken the Union".

Jenkyns said Steve Baker, a junior minister in the Brexit department, had also quit.

Arch-Brexiteer Jacob Rees-Mogg hit out at the "defeatism" in the Government's plans, warning that he would vote against them - and suggested other Eurosceptics may do the same.

On Friday, Davis and the rest of May's fractious Cabinet finally agreed on a plan for future trade ties with the EU.

"The Prime Minister is in office but not in power".

Others were understood to have already handed in their letter to 1922 Committee chair Sir Graham Brady due to concerns the Government had "capitulated" when it came to her own Brexit red lines.

Labour Party chairman Ian Lavery said: "This is absolute chaos and Theresa May has no authority left".

The 100-page Brexit white paper, due this week, was the subject of a weird ping pong between Dexeu and the Cabinet Office Europe unit, which repeatedly vetoed its language - and this was the reason for its delay, and the argument meant to be settled by Chequers.

In his resignation letter, Davis said the "common rule book' policy hands control of large swathes of our economy to the European Union and is certainly not returning control of our laws in any real sense".

Writing in The Daily Telegraph on Monday, Mr Rees-Mogg said: "If the proposals are as they now appear, I will vote against them and others may well do the same".

"[Under the agreement set out] we will be a rule-taker, we will not be able to make the trade deals we hoped for".

Appearing on the BBC's The Andrew Marr sShow on Sunday, he said: "I'm a realist and one of the things about politics is you mustn't, you shouldn't, make the ideal the enemy of the good".

Hard-line Brexit backers who argue that May should have a clean, decisive break from Brussels, spent the weekend complaining that her recently revealed proposals were a timid capitulation, a "Brexit in name only", that ignored "the will of the people" who voted 52 to 48 percent in June 2016 to leave the European bloc. I call on the Prime Minister to see sense and bring forward a plan that heeds the mounting evidence against a hard Brexit from opposition parties, the business community and the devolved administrations.

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson backed the proposals at Chequers, despite claiming that defending the plans was like "polishing a turd" during the meeting. That was meant to kick-start talks that have been stalled for months.

Conservative MP and Remainer Anna Soubry did not refer directly to Mr Davis' resignation, but tweeted it was "not the time for egos, grandstanding and blind ideology".
