Philippe Coutinho and Neymar bagged a goal each as Brazil secured their first win at the FIFA World Cup 2018 against Costa Rica.

After a slighly ponderous first half, Brazil cranked up the pressure in the second as Gabriel Jesus´s header crashed against the crossbar and Coutinho was denied by the ever-present Gamboa on the line.

Celso Borges should have done better when he dragged an effort wide of the target from a Cristian Gamboa cutback after 13 minutes and, for all of their time on the ball, Brazil found it hard to find a way through the Costa Rica defence.

Costa Rica are also likely to stick with the same side that lost to Serbia.

Philippe Coutinho - the game's outstanding player - pounced on hold-up play from Jesus to break the deadlock in the 91st minute, with Neymar making sure of the points from Douglas Costa's cross.

The defeat ended Costa Rica's World Cup campaign as they bowed out after two straight defeats.

Costa Rica had the best chance of the first half on 13 minutes when Celtic defender Cristian Gamboa darted past Paulinho and pulled a cross back for Celso Borges, who stroked a side-footed shot narrowly wide.

Coutinho got the victor in the 91st minute, and Neymar got his goal later in stoppage time as the South Americans move to four points in Group F and have a little breathing room with one match to play. But, after consulting the Video Assistant Referee system, known as VAR, he reversed the decision.

In the end, Brazil found the net with Philippe Coutinho prodding home a late victor through the legs of Keylor Navas.

Just minutes later and Neymar was finally awarded a yellow card after throwing the ball into the ground and shouting verbal abuse at Oscar Duarte.

Broken, Costa Rica conceded again right at the death.

However, Coutinho's finish banished the tension and frustration, and led to 57-year-old Tite tumbling onto the pitch during the celebrations among Brazil's squad and coaches.

- Neymar has scored 56 goals in 87 matches for Brazil - only Pele (77) and Ronaldo (62) have scored more.
