Saudi-led troops fight rebel forces south of Yemen's Hodeida

The United States has turned down three requests within the past 24 hours from the UAE to provide more support, including minesweepers.

"The armed forces which are supported by the Arab coalition have freed Hodeida International Airport from the Houthi militias and the engineering teams have started to clear the airport and its surroundings from mines and bombs", the military said on its official Twitter account.

It also said that UAE forces and local allies had penetrated the Houthis' front line on the airport perimeter.

The Arab coalition also struck the main road linking Hodeida to the capital Sanaa to block reinforcements.

Ahead of the talks, Swedish UN ambassador Carl Skau said it was time for the council to call for an immediate freeze to the military operation.

The Conflict Armament Research Center said earlier that the bombs are similar to those used by Iranian-backed Hezbollah in southern Lebanon and by insurgents in Iraq and Bahrain, suggesting an Iranian role in their manufacture.

In the face of global concerns over the humanitarian situation, the UAE said on Friday that it would begin sending aid by air and sea to Hodeida, the state-run WAM news agency said.

After an emergency closed-door meeting on Thursday, the UN Security Council called for Hodeida and the port of Saleef to be kept open and reiterated support for a political solution to the three-year conflict. "To the contrary, we have allowed them safe passage to the north of the city if they want to drop their arms and leave".

The insurgents, who have ramped up missile attacks against Saudi Arabia, are often known to claim successful strikes.

"They did not encourage us, but did not discourage us", the official said.

Fighting raged near Hudaida airport and al-Durayhmi, a rural area 10km south of the city, UAE's WAM news agency said.

Their fear is that a protracted fight could force a shutdown of Hodeida's port at a time when a halt in aid risks tipping millions into starvation.

But a Huthi attack some 80 kilometres (50 miles) south of the city provided a diversion, cutting loyalist forces off from the government-held ports of Khokha and Mokha, sparking fresh clashes along the coastline.

The Houthis seized control of Sanaa in September 2014, later pushing south toward the port city of Aden.

Despite strong US ties with coalition members, particularly the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, the war in Yemen faces strong opposition in the US Congress.

"The military operations to liberate the city of Hodeida will not be stopped until we secure the city and its strategic port and that won't last too long", he told The Associated Press.

Yemen's government said Wednesday that negotiations had failed to force the Houthis from Hudaida, and that a grace period for UN-led peace efforts was over.

On Monday, the Security Council said it supported United Nations envoy Martin Griffiths, who is leading diplomatic efforts to convince the Huthi rebels to hand over control of the port.

On Thursday, authorities at Hodeida port said the Red Sea lifeline remained open to shipping.

Russia's UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia, the president of the Security Council for June, said after the meeting that the Council members are deeply concerned about the humanitarian risks of the situation.

Britain's United Nations ambassador Karen Pierce, who called the meeting, told reporters before it started that United Nations special envoy Martin Griffiths has been trying to negotiate the withdrawal of the Shiite rebels, known as Houthis, who control Hodeida. In a statement, he held the United States and Britain responsible for the Saudi-backed attack on the vital port city.

The assault is a gamble by the Arab states, who insist they can swiftly capture the port without major disruption to aid supplies in a country already experiencing the world's most pressing humanitarian crisis. The UAE official said the operation was part of an effort to break the military stalemate between the coalition and the Houthis, who the U.S. and the coalition view as being armed and backed by Iran.
