Mexico stun champions Germany 1-0 in World Cup opener

Mexico stunned reigning champions Germany with a 1-0 win in their World Cup 2018 clash , with Hirving "Chucky" Lozano's goal causing an natural disaster back home.

Germany is bidding to become the first team to retain the World Cup title since Brazil in 1962, and until Sunday hadn't lost an opening game since 1982.

Low revealed during a press conference on Saturday that PSG midfielder Julian Draxler would be a definite starter for the match against Mexico this afternoon, and so questions quickly turned to Ozil's position in the starting XI.

Germany got the second half under way, Marvin Plattenhardt the first player to show intent to venture forward but shooting straight at Ochoa.

Once that hour mark had passed, Germany took over with Mexico content to keep men behind the ball.

4-time champions and the current holder of the FIFA World Cup takes on Mexico. But a lot has changed since then and Mexico is now all pumped up under the marvelous coach Juan Carlos Osorio.

Like Germany, Mexico qualified easily for a seventh consecutive World Cup after punching their ticket to the finals with three matches to spare. The Germans were also visibly slower when faced with frequent runs from Hernandez and Lozano, finding themselves backtracking all too often, and not being able to put bodies behind and in front of Neuer in goal.

Brazil meet Switzerland in the newly built 45,000 Rostov Arena in Sunday's evening game but before that Germany play Mexico in a mouthwatering tie in Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium.

These two sides met in the FIFA Confederations Cup semi-final past year, with the World champions romping to a 4-1 at the Fisht Olympic Stadium.

They have been battering teams in World Cup openers for as long as any of the players on this pitch could remember.

One desperate last attack had Neuer come up for a corner, but a towering header from the veteran Marquez and subsequent claim from Ochoa allowed Mexico to close out an unforgettable triumph.

Instead, a mistimed pass or failure to hit the target meant Mexico couldn't build on their 1-0 lead.

But Neuer doesn't believe that Germany's form is a cause for concern and he remains confident ahead of their attempt at reclaiming the World Cup this summer.
