Explosion at Zimbabwean president's rally

Explosion at Zimbabwean president's rally

He was unhurt, but vice presidents Constantino Chiwenga and Kembo Mohadi, and another minister, suffered minor injuries in the blast at the White City Stadium in the second city of Bulawayo.

A record 23 people have filed to run for president in the July 30 election.

"Their successful conduct will mark a major step in the efforts to enhance democracy and the rule of law in Zimbabwe", the statement read.

"The EU was very happy to receive an invitation to observe this election".

"There was an explosion as Mnangagwa was leaving the stage".

He was not hurt, his spokesman said.

The July 30 vote is the first without Mugabe since independence in 1980.

The forthcoming election in Zimbabwe is the latest turning point in what has proved the most tumultuous few months in nearly four decades of Zimbabwe's political history. "We must not speculate ahead of investigations", Charamba said. "Political competition should not fracture Zimbabweans but should be a measure to deepen their democratic credentials", President Kenyatta said.

"These are my mortal enemies and the attempts have been so many", he told the state broadcaster on Saturday night.

"There are two long-standing tensions in Zimbabwe: First, within ZANU-PF, between Mnangagwa's Lacoste faction and Mugabe's G40 factions, with an undertone of tribal tension", Malik said in a note to investors. We do not want to point fingers at each other over this. We will therefore have a consolidated figure tomorrow [Sunday], but so far that is the figure we have. The strongest response to violence is peace.

"There has been an incident at Bulawayo where the president was addressing a rally".

The blast has shocked many in Zimbabwe, and Mnangagwa has called it a cowardly act.

"The ANC views these as barbaric and cowardice acts of assassination attempts and deliberate ploys to destabilise and create disunity and confusion in our sister African countries. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families", the embassy said in a message posted on Twitter.

There is no indication of who might be responsible for Saturday's attack.

The Head of State emphasized that politics of violence has no space in today's modern politics.

"We as a people must unite". He has openly joked about them at rallies.

Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa has survived an apparent bomb attack in the city of Bulawayo.

Mr Manangagwa has urged Zimbabweans to shun violence. "This has never happened in the history of Zimbabwe", the former AFZ boss said.

Sources say that Mnangagwa was whisked to safety by his security detail.

Mnangagwa said the explosion occurred just "inches" from him. "Notwithstanding the disturbances, the party will continue its campaign programmes as scheduled", he said.
