English bulldog Zsa Zsa wins Ugliest Dog contest

Going into this year's World Ugliest Dog Contest in Petaluma, Linda Elmquist of Tucson, Arizona, had high hopes that her dog could make another run at the title.

But after taking one look at a rival named Zsa Zsa, Elmquist figured it was game over Saturday night.

Dogs in the competition flaunt their imperfections as they walk down a red carpet with their owners.

As well as Zsa Zsa, this year's competitors included a blackhead-covered Chinese-crested dachshund mutt and a bulldog bitser with excess wrinkly skin. A panel of judges evaluates the ugliness of a dog and decides the victor.

According to her biography, she was found through a pet-finding site by owner Megan Brainard, from Minnesota.

Last year's victor was a 125-pound gentle giant named Martha - a Neopolitan Mastiff with gas and a droopy face.

The event, at the Sonoma-Marin Fairgrounds, north of San Francisco, helps organisers publicise that many pets are available for adoption. The oldest dog in the competition, Moe, a 16-year-old Brussels Griffon-pug mix from Santa Rosa, California, took the award. The tongue dangled at least four inches under her jaw while Zsa Zsa rested, similar to the melting watch of Salvador Dali's painting "The Persistence of Memory". Here's what our winning pup's profile had to say about her life before World's Ugliest Dog stardom.

The nine-year-old's muscular, rounded front legs and an underbite made her standout from the rest of the crowd.

The contest is usually held on Friday nights, but organizers moved the competition to Saturday in an effort to draw a bigger audience.
