Donald Trump Just Told Republicans To Back Off Immigration Reform - For Now

GOP leaders trying to persuade colleagues to seize the moment and tackle immigration problems by approving the bill, which includes $25 billion for Trump's border wall and a path to citizenship for young immigrants who have lived in the US illegally since childhood.

The US president suggested Democrats had fabricated some of the news that came from the border following a backlash against his policy of forcibly separating illegal immigrant families.

Trump reversed the policy with an executive order this week, but confusion about how it will be implemented, and how quickly the government could switch gears, has left the issue unsettled.

President Donald Trump blasted Democrats for the crisis at the border.

"She said she never wants to come back, and that this experience has been so traumatizing", Cortes Romero said.

President Donald Trump took to Twitter Friday morning, telling his fellow Republicans in Congress to "stop wasting their time" on immigration legislation until after November.

Mr Trump had defended his approach before signing the order - reportedly following an intervention from his wife and daughter - and he and Vice President Mike Pence insisted the hard-line policy would continue.

"Republicans should stop wasting their time on Immigration until after we elect more Senators and Congressmen/women in November", he wrote after House Republican leaders on Thursday evening delayed votes on their compromise measure to sometime next week.

He accused Democratic members with "just playing games" and having "no intention" of helping Republicans "to solves this decades old problem".

"We can pass this legislation after the Red Wave", Trump tweeted.

All 435 House seats and a third of the 100-member Senate will be up for grabs in November.

The House on Thursday rejected a bill favoured by conservatives that would have halted the practice of splitting up families and addressed a range of other immigration issues. After a vote on the more conservative of two GOP proposals failed Thursday, a vote on the more moderate "compromise" bill was pushed off to Friday - and then possibly to next week.

But Trump's tweet, said Rep. Patrick T. McHenry (R-N.C.), "is very much in reality on the difficulties of immigration reform, and it also is the reality given the partisan nature of our current environment in a political year".

"It's a horrifically chilling signal", said another retiring Republican, Rep. Mark Sanford of SC, who recently lost his primary election after frequently criticizing Trump.

"You just fear that tweet in the morning", said Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Florida.

The president on Wednesday signed an executive order under which parents prosecuted for entering US illegally would no longer be separated from their children.

First Lady Melania Trump boards an Air Force plane before traveling to Texas to visit facilities that house and care for children taken from their parents at the U.S. -Mexico border June 21, 2018 at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland.

GOP lawmakers emerged from a lengthy closed-door meeting in the US Capitol late Thursday saying more work was needed. That would be a sharp increase from the 2,500 beds available for families in the last fiscal year. According to ABC News, several US mayors went to visit one of the border towns.

One public law office in Texas has said state prosecutors would be dismissing cases in which parents were charged with illegally entering the country and separated from their children, while in the border city of McAllen, 17 immigrants have been unexpectedly let off without any charges.
